A young West Berlin television and radio dealer is causing some concern among his fellow traders. For several weeks he's been undercutting his opponents' prices - that's good for business in any field - but few dealers would go as low as this man. He's selling television sets, in working order of course, for one or two Pfennig - that's less than a penny (sterling) or a cent.
The dealer says he's selling the sets cheaply to clear his shelves for colour television. The sets are those traded in for new ones.
The "give-away" prices have so worried his competitors that the dealer receives daily threatening letters and telephone calls.
Today (Monday) there was an added incentive for customers: a free, brand-new television set for one lucky person....black and white, though.
People began waiting outside the shop in West Berlin yesterday evening - some eighteen hours before the door opened.
And during the mad scramble this morning for bargains, many started crying but not for joy. Somebody let off tear-gas inside and the dealer thinks it may well have been a competitor.
In the end, a youngster won the free, new set and police were called in to clear the crowd as fighting broke out.
