  • Description

An appearance by Lea Rabin, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin, was boycotted by Arab and other third world delegation at the International Women's Year Conference in Mexico City, Mexico on Tuesday (24 June). Many delegation got up and walked out of the conference hall when she took her place at the Rostrum.

The action is the latest political dispute to take place at the United Nations sponsored conference. Delegates are already embroiled in a dispute between the third world countries and the west over a third world draft statement saying there can no sexual equality unless the world's economic system is completely restructured. The draft called the present system "profoundly unjust".

Western nations would go no further than to say the system was "in need of change". A politically acceptable compromise is now being worked out for the official conference statement.

The political discussions have sidetracked the central issue of the conference in the view of many delegates. In addition, an of unofficial conference of women's rights being conducted simultaneously in Mexico City, has criticised the political over tones of the U.N. effort.

The U.N. conference, which opened 23 June and will 2 July, was convened to consider the status of women throughout the world and to propose means of encouraging sexual equality.

The following speech is an exact from Mrs. Rabin's speech.
