  • Description

THE 16-NATION FISHING CONFERENCE RESUMED ITS MEETINGS IN LONDON'S LANCASTER HOUSE TODAY (WEDNESDAY), AFTER A MONTH'S RECESS. PROSPECTS FOR AGREEMENT ON THE DISPUTED ISSUE OF FISHING LIMITS ARE CONSIDERED SLIM. AUTHORITATIVE SOURCES SAY THAT IF NO AGREEMENT IS REACHED, BRITAIN IS LIKELY TO EXTEND HER TERRITORIAL LIMITS AND EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS FROM THREE TO SIX MILES.

BRITAIN, WORRIED ABOUT INTENSIVE OVER EXPLOITATION OF TRADITIONAL FISHING GROUNDS BY OTHER COUNTRIES, HAS PUT FORWARD THE 'SIX PLUS SIX' FORMULA. SHE WOULD IN PRACTICE EXTEND LIMITS TO 12 MILES, BUT WOULD ALLOW NATIONS WHICH HAVE TRADITIONALLY FISHED IN THE OUTER SIX, TO CONTINUE DOING SO BY AGREEMENT. BELGIUM SUPPORTED BY FRANCE AND WEST GERMANY, HAS PROPOSED RETENTION OF THE THREE MILE LIMIT.

ONE NOTEABLE DEVELOPMENT ON THE FIRST DAY: THE DANISH DELEGATION HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED TO SUPPORT THE 12-MILE LIMIT - ACCORDING TO SOURCES IN COPENHAGEN.
