    On the eve of his 85th birthday, English novelist Somerset Maugham was filmed by Visnews at his villa in Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat, French Riviera Jan 23.

    Film shows Mr. Maugham and his private secretary, Mr. A. Searle, walking in the garden of the villa "La Mauresque", some 20 miles outside Nice. In his writing-room the novelist is seated at his table.

    The villa is a veritable museum. Mr. Maugham collects pictures and the two seen on film are by Gauguin and Matisse.

    On his birthday Jan 25 the novelist received hundreds of greetings, among them a telegram from Sir Winston Churchill reading "Many happy returns - W.S.C". Secretary A. Searle said: "He is tireless and cheerful to-day as usual and pretends to be a little astonished at reaching 85."
    Translated into many languages, "Of Human Bondage", "The Moon and Sixpence", "The Trembling of a Leaf" (1915-21) and "The Razor's Edge" (1944) are among his best-known works. After the second world war he wrote, among others, "Then and Now" and "A Writer's Notebook". His latest publication-essays under the title of "Points of View" - appeared in 1958.
