    Background: ROME, ITALY

A four-month old baby girl, a passenger aboard the Iranian plane hijacked to Rome on August 8, underwent heart surgery on August 9 at Rome's Bambino Gesu (Baby Jesus) hospital. Professor Carlo Marcelletti, chief surgeon of the operating team, said the condition of the baby was improving. The parents of the child -Nafiseh Parham - who told reporters hospitals in Iran were not equipped to perform such surgery, placed a photograph of Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini at her bedside. Nafiseh and her parents were among more than 280 passengers - Moslem pilgrims - who had been heading for Mecca when two young hijackers, identifying themselves as opponents of Khomeini, ordered the plane to Rome. All passengers were later released unhurt. Italian legal officials announced that the hijackers, identified as Mohsem Rahgohzar, 17, and Hosein Eftekhari, 18, both members of the Iranian opposition group, the People's Mujahideen, would face charges of air piracy and kidnapping.
