  • Description

King Hassan of Morocco took the salute at a military parade to celebrate the country's 20th anniversary of independence from France, in the Moroccan capital Rabat on tuesday (18 November).

In a radio broadcast the day before King Hassan told his countrymen that the "Spanish Sahara had been returned to Morocco."
Earlier this month on King Hassan's orders 350,000 Moroccans marched into neighbouring Spanish Sahara to stake their country's claim on the phosphate rich territory.

The marchers were stopped by Spanish Army defence lines about 20 miles inside the country and were finally withdrawn by the King after talks had begun between Spain, Morocco and Mauritania to discuss the future of the country.

It has since been agreed that Spanish troops will withdraw from the Spanish Sahara by February and Spain, Mauritania and Morocco will form a provisional administration in the country early next year. Algeria opposes the agreement, favouring the United Nations proposal of self determination for the Spanish Sahara's 74,000 inhabitants.

Spanish representatives were also at Tuesday's anniversary parade -showing that the confrontation appears to have left no bad feelings between the countries.
