  • Description

Just as he led the World Eleven to an easy victory over Australia in the Kerry Packer series in Perth, former England Captain, Tony Greig suffered another setback to his standing "official" cricket.

The English County Cricket Club, Sussex, announced that he had been sacked from the captaincy over alleged derogatory remarks he made in a Sydney newspaper about current England captain. Geoff Boycott.

However, it seems that the committee took into account a proposal made by Notting amshire and seconded by Lancas ire that Sussex he banned from first class cricket. This reflects the counties' anger at Greig's reappointment as Sussex captain at a time when he is involved in the "rival" Kerry Packer World Series of Cricket.

Greig's reappointment as Sussex captain before Christmas, after "defecting" to Kerry Packer caused controversy with in the county.

In Perth, Greig said he hadn't yet been informed officially about the sacking -- but he'd heard of it by a telephone call. He said he'd save "venom" in any comment until he received the official notification. Meanwhile he felt he was still eligible to join Sussex as a player -- but again he couldn't say how he felt about this prospect.

Asked how the move would a fact players in the packer World Series, Greig said it was just one more barrier the World Series cricketers would have to overcome in their fight for international recognition.
