Background: WALES TODAY (SATURDAY) CAPTURED THE TRIPLE CROWN AND THE INTERNATIONAL RUGBY UNION CHAMPIONSHIP WHEN THEY DEFEATED IRELAND 14 POINTS TO 8, AT CARDIFF, IN WALES.

IT WAS A RUGGED, HARD FOUGHT MATCH AND DURING THE FIRST HALF THE REFEREE CALLED THE RIVAL CAPTAINS TOGETHER, ASKING THEM TO COOL THEIR FORWARDS DOWN AFTER A NUMBER OF MELEES. WALES WELL DESERVED THEIR VICTORY, SCORED BEFORE A CROWD OF 58,000 AT THE FAMED CARDIFF ARMS PARK
FOR 20 MINUTES IN THE FIRST HALF THEY WERE WITHOUT CENTRE THREE-QUARTER, JOHN DAWES, WHO WAS INJURED. BUT DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEY WERE ONE MAN DOWN FOR MOST OF THE PERIOD, THEY LED 5 POINTS TO NIL AT THE HALF-WAY MARK.

IRELAND FOUGHT WELL, BUT THEY MISSED THEIR CHANCE OF TAKING THE INITIATIVE WHEN FULL-BACK TOM KIERNAN, FAILED TO LAND TWO EASY PENALTY SHOTS IN THE OPENING MINUTES.

IT WAS THE TENTH TIME THAT WALES HAVE WON THE TRIPLE CROWN -- THE MYTHICAL AWARD FOR DEFEATING THE OTHER THREE BRITISH ISLES COUNTRIES IN THE RUGBY UNION CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE. NOW, THEY HAVE A CHANCE OF MAKING A CLEAN SWEEP WHEN THEY MEET FRANCE, IN PARIS, IN A FORTNIGHT -- BUT WHATEVER THE RESULT, WALES HAS SUFFICIENT CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS TO WIN THE INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
