  • Description

THE ROYAL EAST AFRICAN NAVY, DUE TO BE DISBANDED SOON, WAS HOST JAN 9 TO MR.TOM MBOYA, GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION.

DISBANDMENT IS TO COME FOLLOWING TANGANYIKA'S UNILATERAL WITHDRAWAL OF HER FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS THE NAVY'S GBP100,000 UPKEEP.

AFTER A CEREMONY AT MOMBASA NAVAL BASE, MR.MBOYA WENT TO SEA, IN ONE OF THE NAVY'S TWO SHIPS, A 21-YEAR OLD MINESWEEPER.

MR.MBOYA SAW MOST OF THE NAVY'S PERSONNEL : EIGHT OFFICERS, FOUR EUROPEAN INSTRUCTORS, 150 MEN.HE SAID HE WANTED TO SEE THE NAVY SURVIVE.AN INDEPENDENT KENYA WOULD NEED A NAVY, EVEN IF IT WAS FOR NOTHING MORE AND GRANDIOSE THAN COASTAL PATROLS AND CEREMONIAL DUTIES.

HE WAS ALSO REPORTED AS SAYING: WE ARE A MARITIME COUNTRY AND WILL INEVITABLY NEED A NAVY.BUT IN THIS CONTEXT I WOULD STRESS THAT IT MUST BE OUR OWN NAVY - WE DO NOT WANT A BRITISH NAVAL BASE HERE.BUT HE ALSO FELT THAT BRITAIN SHOULD HELP MAINTAIN THE NAVY UNTIL INDEPENDENCE ARRIVED.
