  • Description

French troops who captured apart of Bizerta, Tunis, last July, pulled up their fortifications and began to withdraw to their camps at the Naval-air base of Bizerta, Oct. 1.

Sandbags and barbed wire which had formed roadblocks were removed starting six A.M., and the Military evacuation of the town got under way in an atmosphere of 'complete calm'.

Both French and Tunisian troops participated in the withdrawal, in accordance with the agreement between the French and the Tunisians reached in Tunisia September 29.

By October 2 all the French troops were scheduled to be withdrawn from Bizerta town. With shops open for business and past tension gone, the town, for the Tunisians, began to return to normal. For the French, the future was less certain - some estimate said as many as 7,000 French subjects had left the town.

The Franco-Tunisian agreement on the withdrawal said nothing of the return of the base to Tunisia - the question that cost 700 lives in the fighting over it two months ago.
