  • Description

The operational leader of the 1974 coup in Portugal, Major Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho, has been released from prison after serving a 20-day sentence.

SYNOPSIS: The Major was released from Caxias security prison two hours before his sentence expired to escape photographers and television crews. But the newsmen arrived early and were waiting for him. Major Carvalho immediately went to the Armed Forces High Command building to present himself to his superiors. Many of his supporters were waiting there to greet him.

Major Carvalho was detained in the prison on the outskirts of Lisbon for breaking military regulations by addressing a political meeting in the capital last month. The coup he led in 1974 brought to an end Portugal's right-wing dictatorship. He is still being investigated in connection with his alleged role in a leftist military revolt a year ago.

Major Carvalho, a former commander of the Lisbon military region, came second in last June's presidential election with nearly 17 per cent of the vote. He is now preparing for next month's municipal elections. While the major was talking with military leaders, his supporters from the radical left-wing "popular dynamising groups" of which he is figure-head, were waiting to greet him at Caxias prison.
