SYNOPSIS: Two days of celebrations, marking the tenth anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity, started at Africa Hall, Addis Ababa, on Thursday. There were encouraging signs for future unity.

Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere was greeted as a brother by President Idi Amin of Uganda -- both were applauded when they later shook hands.

General Mobutu was one of twenty-four heads of state present for the celebrations. Algeria's President Houari Boumedienne and Egypt's President Anwar Sadat were also there. All forty-one member nations had representatives at the hall.

The acting chairman for the session was General Yakubu Gowon of Nigeria. Beside him was United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, who called for still closer cooperation between the two organisations. Emperor Haile Selassie arrived to officially inaugurate the anniversary celebrations.

The Emperor said that the tenth anniversary provided a perspective for members to look at the African continent's critical needs. Those present also had the chance to establish priorities for further consolidation of unity and to draw up a plan of action for the coming ten years. During the sometimes stormy Ministerial Council that preceded the celebrations, two important new agreements were reached -- on general policy and on economic declarations.
