  • Description

The intriguing art of the glass blower... in this case flasks, coils and tubes fashioned by Douglas Ellis in the Physics Department at Melbourne University for use in laboratory experiments. He's called a scientific glassblower, but the unusual shapes he conjures out of glass would do credit to a continental craftsman.

It's a fascinating sight for the onlooker. But only the blower himself appreciates the delicate touch that's necessary to shape lines and contours like these...

The glass is hot and at the end of the tube, as malleable as plasticine ... careful use of his breath allows the glassblower to transform the glass piping into the familiar flask shape... Almost like inflating a balloon.

The finished article.. a gas discharge tube... another fragile creation by this artist in glass.
