In Nigeria, a new dock extension has been opened in the country's capital, Lagos. the extension will boost the cargo-handling facilities at the country's main port.
SYNOPSIS: The third Apapa Port Extension was opened by the Nigerian Army Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Theophilus Danjuma, who promised port congestion would now be a thing of the past.
The port was completed well ahead of schedule and took four years to build.
The project is part of a larger scheme to develop Nigeria's major ports.
The opening ceremony was attended by members of the Nigerian Supreme Military Council and representatives of the Army and Navy. People who were involved with the planning and building of the extension -- the Federal Commissioner of Transport, and Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority were also on hand to witness the occasion.
Lieutenant General Danjuma declares the port extension open. Since the Civil War in 1970, Nigeria has enjoyed rapid economic growth. And the post-war reconstruction effort, the growth of the country's oil industry, and the expansion of industry have put a great strain on the existing port facilities.
The port specialises in container handling and has berth facilities for three conventional cargo ships, as well as roll-on, roll-off facilities.
It's hoped that the new port extension will handle about eighty percent of all container traffic coming to Nigeria.
