  • Description

SIR FRANCIS AKANU IBIAM, FORMER ADVISOR TO FORMER REBEL LEADER OJUKWU, FLEW BACK TO NIGERIA ON SATURDAY (MARCH 14). SIR FRANCIS, ONCE GOVERNOR OF THE THEN EASTERN NIGERIA, TOLD NEWSMEN IN LAGOS THAT IT WAS VERY GOOD TO BE HOME AGAIN.

FOR MANY YEARS HEAD OF THE CHRISTIAN COUNCIL OF NIGERIA AND PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES, SIR FRANCIS FLEW INTO LAGOS FROM ZURICH. HE SAID THAT WHILE IN EUROPE HE HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN HUMANITARIAN WORKS, AND NOW HOME IN NIGERIA HE WAS ANXIOUS TO HELP WITH THE RECONCILIATION PROGRAMME.

SIR FRANCIS' RETURN HOME WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE GENERAL AMNESTY DECLARED BY FEDERAL LEADER GOWON. SEVERAL OTHER PROMINENT EX-SECESSIONIST LEADERS ARE EXPECTED TO FOLLOW SIR FRANCIS' EXAMPLE IN RETURNING HOME, ALTHOUGH ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF, BRIGADIER HASSAN KATSINA, HAS DECLARED THAT ODUMEGWU OJUKWU WOULD BE TRIED FOR HIGH TREASON IF HE EVER RETURNED TO NIGERIA.

OTHER SECESSIONIST LEADERS, NOT SPECIFIED BY BRIGADIER KATSINA, WOULD ALSO BE TRIED ON THEIR INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CONFLICT.
