  • Description

IN A CONSTANT WATCH ON ACTIVITY THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DIVIDING WALL, AMERICAN ARMY HELICOPTERS PATROL ALONG THE WESTERN SECTOR BORDER OF BERLIN. FROM HIGH UP THEY ARE ABLE TO OBTAIN A CLEARER PICTURE OF THE MEASURES ADOPTED BY THE EAST GERMAN REGIME TO SEAL OFF THE EASTERN PART OF THE CITY.

ONLY THIS MONTH, EAST GERMAN BULL-DOZERS AND EARTH MOVERS WERE MOVED IN TO COMPLETE A FURTHER DIVISION. HUNDREDS OF FLATS AND HOUSES WERE EVACUATED AND DEMOLISHED TO CLEAR A 300-FEET WIDE 'NO MAN'S LAND' ALONG THE 25-MILE BORDER. AT THE SAME TIME WORK WENT ON OF STRENGTHENING THE EAST BERLIN CONCRETE WALL AND BARBED WIRE BARRIERS, AND THOUSANDS OF EAST GERMAN POLICE AND WORKMEN CONTINUED TO DIG TRENCHES ALONG THE SECTOR AND ZONAL BORDERS.

GARDENS WERE FLATTENED, AND ON THEIR PLACE ROSE WATCH TOWERS FOR EAST GERMAN BORDER POLICE. REPORTS LATE LAST MONTH SAID EAST GERMAN MILITARY WERE LAYING MINES TO HELP ENSURE THE SEALING OF THE BORDER.
