    WITHIN THE NEXT TWO MONTHS, 800 MEN OF THE FIRST BATTALION, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT, NOW IN TRAINING, WILL BE SENT TO SOUTH VIETNAM TO FIGHT AGAINST THE COMMUNIST VIETCONG. AT THE HOLSWORTH CAMP, NEAR SYDNEY, TRAINING WENT ON AS USUAL FOR THEM.

    THE BATTALION IS REGARDED AS ONE OF AUSTRALIA'S MOST EXPERIENCED FIGHTING UNITS. MANY OF ITS OFFICERS AND NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS SERVED IN WORLD WAR TWO, KOREAN AND MALAYA. THE BATTALION HAVE BEEN BASED AT HOLSWORTH, SINCE THEY COMPLETED A TOUR OF DUTY IN MALAYA IN 1961. ITS MEMBERS HAVE UNDERGONE RIGOROUS TRAINING FOR THE KIND OF CONDITION LIKELY TO BE MET IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA.

    THE BATTALION COMMANDER, LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRUMFIELD, WATCHED HIS MEN PRACTICE WITH THE M-60 MACHINE GUN. THE M-60 IS A MODERN AMERICAN WEAPON AND IS BELT-FED. HE WILL MAINTAIN CONTROL OVER THE BATTALION'S ACTIVITIES IN VIETNAM.

    WHEN THE BATTALION LEAVES FOR VIETNAM, ONE OF ITS OLDEST MEMBERS -- A SHETLAND PONY -- WILL STAY BEHIND. THE MASCOT -- COLONEL SEPTIMUS -- HAS BEEN ON THE STRENGTH FOR 16 YEARS.
