  • Description

ANOTHER OF FRANCE'S TOP DESIGNERS HAS PUBLICALLY SHOWN HIS FASHIONS FOR THE COMING AUTUMN AND WINTER SEASONS. HE'S GUY LAROCHE, REGARDED AS ONE OF THE TOP SIX AMONG THE FORTY-TWO MEMBERS OF THE COUTURE SYNDICATE, AND HE PRESENTED HIS COLLECTION IN TYPICALLY PARISIENNE ATMOSPHERE OF THE FIRST STAGE OF THE EIFFEL TOWER.

THE MOST DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF "LAROCHE 1964" ARE THE KNEE-CAP HEMLINE AND A LOW, LOOSE WAISTLINE. BREAKING WITH THE CURRENT TREND, LAROCHE HAS SUBSTITUTED GAITERS AND LEGGINGS FOR FANCY WOOLLEN STOCKINGS THAT HAVE FOUND FAVOUR WITH OTHER DESIGNERS.

HIS CAMPUS COATS AND SUITS WERE IN GAY, CHECKED FABRICS WITH THE GAITERS AND LEGGINGS IN MATCHING FABRICS WHILE THE HATS, WHICH COMPLETED EACH ENSEMBLE, FEATURED CASQUE, BOWL AND TOQUE STYLES MADE OF MINK, BEAVER OR SABLE.

FOR STREET WEAR THERE WERE SUITS OF HEATHER AND PASTER BASKET-WOVEN TWEED. THE TREND HERE WAS TOWARDS LONGER JACKETS WITH MATCHING LONG AND LOOSELY BELTED OVERBLOUSES. SKIRTS WERE DESIGNED FOR EASE OF WALKING AND WERE HIGHLIGHTED BY UNPRESSED PLEATS OR BACK PANELS.

PLEATS AND PANELS WERE THE DOMINANT THEME FOR DAYWEAR, WHILE SLIGHTLY MORE FORMAL TUNIC DRESSES HAD STRAIGHT CUT WITH A NARROW SASH BELT OF SELF FABRIC ACROSS THE HIPBONES.

SOME OF THE TUNICS HAD FLYING PANELS OVER MATCHING UNDERSKIRTS. OTHERS, THREE QUARTER LENGTH TUNICS, HAD A WIDE HEMBAND OF CONTRASTING FABRIC, OR WERE IN SILK SHANTUNG COLLARED IN TWEED, MATCHING THE TWEED UNDERSKIRT AND COAT.

SOME OF THE LAROCHE GARMENTS HAD A "MASCULINE" LINE AND THESE CAME TO THE FORE IN TRENCH COATS. STYLED EXACTLY LIKE A MAN'S, THESE TURNED UP IN GLAMOUROUS FURS AND FABRICS FOR LATE DAYWEAR.

PERHAPS THE MOST DISTINCTIVE HALLMARK OF LAROCHE'S STYLE IS HIS DELICATE DECORATIVE WORK IN BEADS AND STONES. THIS APPEARED IN LATE DAY AND COCKTAIL WEAR AND INCLUDED AS MANY AS ONE MILLION BEADS ON A MODEL.

THE COLLECTION HAS ALREADY AROUSED INTEREST AMONG THE FASHION CONSCIOUS, AND MADAME HEAVE ALPHAND, WIFE OF THE FRENCH AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED STATES HAS INVITED GUY LAROCHE TO SHOW. ???
