  • Description

A six man junta claims to be in control of Venezuela today. But during the night, armoured cars again appeared on the streets of Caracas and the ruling body went into an emergency session amid rumours that ousted dictator Perez Jiminez might try to get back into power. The Junta, headed by Admiral Wolfgang Larrazabal, came to power last Thursday when Jiminez fled the country and sought asylum in the Dominican republic. Larrazabal and other members of the junta assembled in Government headquarters to take the oath of office. Speaking at the Miraflores Palace, Larrazabal promised amnesty to all political prisoners and the holding of free elections in the near future. As in the Hungarian revolt last year the people of Venezuela have hunted down members of the dread secret police...killing them wherever they could be found. These scenes of the two-day revolt were repeated over the weekend when other mobs roamed the streets in their new-found freedom. At the moment, Caracas is ruled under a dusk-dawn curfew, as the junta seeks to bring order out of revolution.
