    Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin pledged his country's complete support for Syria during a visit to the devastated Golan Heights town of Kuneitra on Thursday (3 June).

    Mr. Kosygin made his remarks to reporters after inspecting Kuneitra, destroyed during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. He wished Syrian leaders success in what he described as "these days of trial".

    The Soviet Prime Minister arrived in Baghdad on Tuesday (1 June) for a four-day official visit to Syria. His arrival coincided with Syria's despatch of an armoured intervention force to neighbouring Lebanon. During his visit, Mr. Kosygin has held two sessions of formal talks with President Hafez Al-Assad.

    During his first day in Syria, Mr. Kosygin called for an end to the fighting in Lebanon but made no public mention of Syria's intervention.

    After visiting Kuneitra, the Soviet leader said: "We bow our heads before these devastated houses for the return of peace and prosperity" to the Syrian people.

    He said what he saw in Kuneitra resembled the destruction during World War Two of thousands of Soviet villages and towns, events still vivid in the memories of the Russians.

His arrival coincided with the Syrian despatch of troops to intervene in the civil war in neighbouring Lebanon.

    The Soviet leader said Kuneitra resembled the Soviet towns and villages devastated during World War Two. He said these events were still vivid in the memories of Russians. Mr. Kosygin pledged his country's complete support for Syria during the visit and wished Syrian leaders success in what he described as these days of trial. He called for an end to the fighting in Lebanon but made no public mention of Syria's intervention. Mr. Kosygin had two sessions of formal talks with President Hafez Al-Assad during his visit. The two leaders pledged to restore Lebanon's peace, security and territorial integrity.
