  • Description

As a result of continued fighting Angola's capital, Luanda, is now facing a chronic food shortage. Transport that normally brought supplies into the city is now out of action and the market places are almost empty.

Instead the people are flocking each day to the seafront and are living off fish. But they're paying up to a dollar each for them - expensive for many of them who are out of work because of the war.

Once a week a boat arrives from the south laden with potatoes and as soon as it docks there's a long line of people with bags and money to buy as many as they can.

The road leading to Luanda from the northern front, less than thirty kilometres (18 miles) away, is a series of deserted towns - most of them former industrial centres, which a year ago testified to Angola's thriving economy. The men who ran them have left the country and the African capable of taking over are fighting at the front.

For the Portuguese willing to stay in the city despite the risk, life is uncomfortable and their diet lean, but they say they have too much to lose if they do go.
