FILM SHOWS HOMELESS INHABITANTS OF MSILA AND SCENES OF THE PARTIALLY WRECKED TOWN.

MOST OF MSILA'S 15,000 POPULATION ABANDONED THEIR HOMES FOR OPEN SPACES AFTER THE FIRST EARTHQUAKE ON FRIDAY NIGHT. SCORES OF BUILDINGS IN THE OLD QUARTER OF THE TOWN, MAINLY SINGLE-STOREY BRICK AND MUD HOUSES, CRACKED AND COLLAPSED. FIERCE RAINSTORMS HAMPERED RESCUE WORK.

CONVOYS OF ALGERIAN ARMY LORRIES CARRYING RELIEF SUPPLIES OF TENTS, BLANKETS, CLOTHING AND FOOD ARRIVED IN THE AREA ON SATURDAY NIGHT. MORE CONVOYS WERE BEING ORGANISED.

ALGIERS UNIVERSITY SEISMOGRAPHIC OFFICE SAID THERE WERE FIVE TREMORS IN THE AREA ON FRIDAY NIGHT, WITH THE STRONGEST CENTRED NEAR MSILA. BUILDINGS WERE SHAKEN IN ALGIERS, BUT NO DAMAGE WAS REPORTED.

(FLOODS CAUSED BY TORRENTIAL RAINS HAVE MADE ABOUT 5,000 PEOPLE HOMELESS IN THE SAME REGION OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS.)
