  • Description

There are more than 25 films entered for the top award, or one of the other prizes at the 31th Film Festival of Cannes. Festival President Robert Favre Le Bret has estimated that about 10 entries this year stand a good chance of winning the Golden Palm. Competition for acting awards is also intense.

SYNOPSIS: During the Festival, films are shown throughout the 24-hours of the day and night. Outside on the beach, and at parties, it is time for actors to be seen and deals to be done. Last year, the festival generated an estimated eight million Francs (1.9 million dollars) worth of business. At the Palais des Festivals, it is the turn of the Greeks to show their entry, "Cri de Femme" (a Dream of Passion) directed by Jules Dassin and starring Melina Mercouri. She is tipped by many to win the best actress prize. In the film, see portrays a star playing Medea, the mythical woman who destroyed her children. She then forms a relationship with a real life Medea, played by Ellen Burstyn. The crux of the film is that the heroine insists on playing Medea as a modern parable of woman's fight against the enslaving power of men.

The Jury, which includes Swedish actress Liv Ullmann, will announce the festival prizes on the 30th of May.
