    The body of Sir Hisamuddin Alam Shah, the Yang di Pertuan Agong, or Malayan Head of State, lay-in-state at Kuala Lumpur's National Palace, "Istana Negra", Sept 2. He died the previous day after a 4-week illness. Flags were at half-mast and a 62-gun salute boomed over the city as Premier Tunku Abdul Rahman, and many other officials, paid their last respects to the Paramount Ruler.

    Sir Hisamuddin Shahn- who was 62 - was the Sultan of Selangor and was elected by his fellow state rulers on April 14 this year. Before he developed a high fever from a virus infection it was intended that his installation should take place Sept. 1, His death means that, for the third time in the three years that the Federation has been independent, the nine state rulers will meet to elect a Paramount Ruler from among themselves.

    In his last public engagements, the Paramount Ruler broadcast to the country and took the salute at a parade in Kuala Lumpur at the beginning of August, making the official end of the emergency in Malaya.
