  • Description

AUSTRALIAN FORCES STATIONED IN VIETNAM HAVE RECENTLY BEEN ASSIGNED TO 60 SQUARE MILES OF DENSE JUNGLE IN THE HO TRAM CAPE REGION OF SOUTH VIETNAM. THEY ARE TAKING PART IN A SEARCH AND DESTROY MISSION AGAINST VIET CONG FORCES CODE-NAMED OPERATION KENMORE. THE COASTAL REGION IS ABOUT 18 MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCES BASE AT NUI DAT.

THE MEN TAKING PART IN OPERATION KENMORE ARE FROM THE 2ND AND 7TH BATTALIONS, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT. IT IS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST LARGE-SCALE OPERATIONS UNDERTAKEN BY THE AUSTRALIANS SINCE THEY ENTERED THE WAR.

THEY HAVE TO FIND THEIR WAY THROUGH POORLY MAPPED JUNGLE TERRITORY, AND HAVE USED ROPES TO CROSS CROCODILE-INFESTED RIVERS.

THE AREA IS THOUGHT TO HARBOUR SEVERAL VIET CONG SUPPLY AND INFILTRATION COMPLEXES. IT IS BELIEVED THE VIET CONG FORCES HAVE BEEN COLLECTING EQUIPMENT, FOOD, AMMUNITION AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES IN THE AREA AND THEN CARRYING THEM OVERLAND TO NORTHERN BASES.

THE AUSTRALIANS HAVE CAPTURED 24,000 POUNDS OF RICE AND LARGE QUANTITIES OF SALT WITHIN THE PAST FEW DAYS. IN SPORADIC SKIRMISHES SEVEN VIET CONG HAVE BEEN KILLED AND ONE WOUNDED. AUSTRALIAN CASUALTIES HAVE BEEN LIGHT.

ONE CAPTURED VIET CONG SOLDIER WAS BLINDFOLDED AND HELICOPTERED TO THE TASK FORCE BASE FOR QUESTIONING.
