    In his first state of the nation report to the National Congress since his takeover in November last year, Chile's President Allende said on Friday (21 May) that his left-wing Government would seek to transfer economic and political power to the people and replace the present constitution with a "socialist-orientated" one.

    The President said in an emotional speech that socialism would allow Chileans to meet their destiny and held out the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China as possible directions to follow.
