  • Description

Arab commandos continued to hold 54 hostages hidden in Amman on Monday(14 Sept) as the focus of the hijack crisis shifted from the airstrip in Jordan where the jets had landed to the international effort to obtain the release of hostages and concern over their condition.

At Dawson's field known by the commandos as Revolution airfield, where the hijacked aircraft had been forced to land, all that remained of the drama was the wreckage of the three aircraft -- blown up by the guerrillas on Sunday. Local Arabs and members of Iraqi forces stationed in Jordan were among visitors to look at what was left on 20 million sterling's worth ($48 million) of modern aircraft.

While Red Cross continued its efforts to secure the release of the remaining 54 hostages held by the commandos, the special Papal envoy to Jordan has returned to Rome after unsuccessfully negotiating with the guerrillas on Sunday (13 Sept). The Envoy was to have gone on to Israel but cut short his visit when it seemed his mission had failed.

Two of the hostages still being held by the guerrillas, the co-pilot and engineer of the hijacked TWA Boeing, spoke to a press conference on Sunday (13 Sept) and first answered questions on whether anything had been taken from them by the commandos:
Among passengers who have been set free was a Dutch engineer who was asked why he was not released earlier and whether this connected with the arrest of an Arab girl by British authorities after an alleged hi-jack attempt.

The hijack situation has been further complicated by the arrest of 450 Arab commandos suspects rounded up by Israeli authorities during the Weekend. Seventy-five of the suspects have now been released but the arrests may affect attempts to secure the release of the aircraft hostages.
