  • Description

Thousands of people flocked to the centre of Luanda on Saturday (15 March) to celebrate the 14th anniversary of the foundation of the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA), now a member of the country's transitional Government.

The date - which i held as the FNLA's foundation day and is marked by a public holiday - actually records the first attacks in Northern Angola during March, 1961, by the FNLA's forerunner, the Union of Angolan People (UPA), at the start of the colonial war against Portugal.

The anniversary celebrations included a music festival a religious ceremony, and rallies outside the FNLA's offices and in the city's National Liberation Square.

Leading the festivities were the FNLA's representative on the ruling Presidential Council, Mr. Johnny Eduardo, and Minister for Information in the transitional Government, Mr. Hendrik Vaal Neto.

As well as listening to a speech from Mr. Eduardo, Angolans heard an hour-long broadcast by the President of the FNLA, Mr. Holden Roberto, from his headquarters in Kinshasa, Zaire.

Mr. Roberto appealed for national unity and reconciliation to assure Angola's future after the former Portuguese territory becomes independent on November 11.

He attacked the wave of strikes -- especially in the ports -- which have been damaging the country's economy. He said that such strikes could only advance the interests of those who wanted to bring Angola under foreign and imperialist domination.
