  • Description

IN LONDON, ON THE FIRST DAY OF APRIL, SPRING SUNSHINE AND PRIDE OF PLACE FOR A WOMAN WHO FOR FIFTY-FIVE YEARS HAS STOOD BESIDE THE "GREATEST LIVING ENGLISHMAN" - LADY CHURCHILL, CELEBRATING HER SEVENTY-EIGHT BIRTHDAY. IT WAS A SMALL FAMILY PARTY AT THE WESTMINSTER FLAT OF HER DAUGHTER MARY.
FOR SIR WINSTON, IT WAS HIS FIRST SPRING OUTING, AND IN REPLY TO GREETINGS HE SAID HE WAS "VERY WELL". THE CHURCHILLS WERE MARRIED IN 1908: MISS CLEMENTINE HOZIER, TWENTY-THREE, A NOTED BEAUTY OF THE EDWARDIAN ERA, AND WINSTON CHURCHILL A JUNIOR MINISTER AT THIRTY-FOUR. AND SINCE THOSE EARLY DAYS THEY'VE SHARED DOMESTIC HAPPINESS, THE TURBULENCE OF POLITICAL LIFE - AND A PEOPLE'S ACCLAMATION. ALSO AT THE PARTY - SIR WINSTON'S SON RANDOLPH.
