Background: FOR THE ABORIGINES AROUND ALICE SPRINGS, IN AUSTRALIA'S NORTHERN TERRITORY, THE ANNUAL RODEO AT THE HERMANNSBERG MISSION IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST.

THE HERMANNSBERG MISSION IS ONE OF SEVERAL MISSIONS IN OUTBACK AUSTRALIA CATERING FOR THE NEEDS OF THE NOMADIC ABORIGINAL TRIBES, INCLUDING EDUCATION, WHO ARE ISOLATED BY THE VAST DISTANCES FROM LARGER COMMUNITIES. THE NEAREST LARGE TOWN IS ALICE SPRINGS.

THIS YEAR'S HERMANNSBERG RODEO WAS WATCHED BY ABOUT 500 PEOPLE, NEARLY ALL OF THEM ABORIGINES. THE RODEO ENTRANTS RODE THE WILD "BRUMBY" HORSES, MANY OF THEM ONLY PREVIOUSLY CAPTURED, AND ALL OF THEM COMPLETELY UNTAMED.

THE AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINALS ARE AMONG THE WORLD'S FINEST RIDERS. THEY HAVE BUILT UP A FINE TRADITION OF HORSEMANSHIP, EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE NO HORSES IN AUSTRALIA BEFORE THE FIRST WHITE SETTLERS ARRIVED ABOUT 180 YEARS AGO.THE HARSH WILDERNESS OF NORTHERN AUSTRALIA MOST STOCKMEN AND DROVERS ARE ABORIGINES. A NOMADIC PEOPLE BY INCLINATION, THE LIFE OF A STOCK DROVER APPEALS TO THEM MORE THAN THE TOWN AND CITY OCCUPATIONS. NOT ONLY DO THEY EARN A GOOD LIVING FROM DROVING, THEY ALSO CAN ALSO EARN LARGE SUMS AT THE MANY RODEOS, "BUSH CARNIVALS" AND PICNIC RACES THROUGHOUT "OUTBACK" AUSTRALIA.
