TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 7: HAWATMEH: The reactionary regime wanted this crisis to develop into final confrontation and battle to liquidate the resistance. But the unity of all detachments of Palestinian resistance and their solid stand against the conspiracy, led finally to a diversion and a split inside the regime itself and led therefore to the liquidation of this conspiracy. Fedayeen arrested by the ultra-reactionary troops were brutally tortured, and they were denied even medical treatment or appropriate or proper food; whereas the soldiers and patriotic officers or other officers who were arrested by the resistance forces were treated completely as brothers, because we believe that they are not responsible for what took place.

Background: Mr. Nayef Hawatmeh, leader of the Popular Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, commented at a Press Conference in Amman Wednesday (June 17) about the origins of the previous fighting between Palestinian guerrillas and the troops of King Hussein's Jordan regime.
Mr. Hawatmeh took the opportunity at the Press Conference to warn that a new crisis could flare up within a fortnight, if demands made by the commandos were not met.
Demands listed the previous day by the Popular Democratic front included the disbandment of special security units, the purging from the Government of so-called reactionary elements, and the trial of those responsible for the recent events in which 1,000 persons were reported dead or wounded in Amman.
King Hussein was due to speak at a Press Conference in Amman today (June 17). The previous week in a message to the Jordanian Nation, he declared he was not prepared make more compromises to the Palestinian Guerillas.
