After a season that has seen former World Motor Champion Nikki Lauda languishing at the bottom of the drivers points table, the Alfa Brabham team appears to have decided to abandon the Italian engine. In a private test session at the Silverstone circuit, England, on Tuesday, the Brabham team produced a Grand Prix car powered by the Fort Cosworth engine - winner of more Grand Prix motor races than any other Formula One engine. Indications are that the new combination will be in action for the team in at least one of the remaining four races of the 1979 season.
The decision will also remove any conflicting interest within the Alfa Company which is testing its own Grand Prix car and is expected to enter the competition next year.
But the change also appears to have come too late to affect the decision of Austrian Laude to leave the Brabham team and join another Grand Prix squad.
At Silverstone on Tuesday, the new car was tested by Brazilian Nelson Picquet who has been driving number two to Lauda. But also present at the Silverstone test was Argentinean driver Ricardo Zunini who is tipped to replace Lauda in the team.
Brabham must he hoping to repeat the success of the former Matra Ligier team of France who abandoned their French Matra engine at the start of the season and went over to the successful Ford engine. To the astonishment of all the experts, the unfancied French team immediately went in to the lead in the Championship and has been one of the top contenders ever since.
Whilst the Italian connection for Brabham ends of the mechanical side, ??? co-operation with their Italian sponsors, Parmalat will continue.
