  • Description

The Austrian chancellor, Bruno Kreisky, arrived in Kuwait on Monday night (15 March), heading a six-member fact finding mission from the Socialist International organisation.

Dr. Kreisky and his team of West German, Swedish, Italian and French socialists were due to visit Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates after Kuwait, and the visit is seen as an effort to reassure states that the organisation has no anti-arab bias.

It is the third visit Dr. Kreisky has made to Kuwait on behalf of the group since it decided to try and improve its standing in the Arab world after the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

Israel's dominant Labour party has, for many years, been affiliated with the International, which brings together parties in many countries These include Britain's ruling Labour party and the Social Democratic parties now in power in West Germany, Austria and in some Scandinavian countries.

In 1974, Dr. Kreisky led a Socialist International mission to Egypt, Syria and Israel and a second mission last year to Morocco, algeria, Tunisia and Libya.

He is respected in the Arab world as a statesman who has not allowed his own Jewish background to affect Austria's relations with the Arab states, according to observers.

On their arrival in Kuwait, the delegation was met by the Kuwait Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Sheik Jaber Al-Ahmed.
