    Background: PIETERMARITZBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Forty-two white mercenaries were convicted on air piracy charges by a court in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, on July 27. They were due to be sentenced on July 29. The incident followed an attempted coup d'etat in the Seychelles last November against President Albert Rene's leftist government. The coup failed, and after a gunfight at Mahe airport, an Air India Boeing 707 was seized and flown to Durban. The mercenaries were later arrested and charged under South Africa's anti-hijacking law. Leader of the group was Colonel "Mad Mike" Hoare, who achieved international renown during the Congo (now Zaire) wars in the 1960's. Hoare, and his chief lieutenant, freelance photographer Peter Duffy were found guilty on three air piracy charges. Six other mercenaries were convicted on two counts of unlawful seizure of an aircraft and endangering the safety of plane and passengers. Thirty four men were convicted of endangering the aircraft. One of the accused, the American, Charles Dukes, was acquitted. The judge rejected defence claims that the Boeing's pilot had willingly gone along with the mercenaries. Since the trial began, Irish-born Mike Hoare has been running a mercenaries' club, called "The Wild Geese".
