Background: The Wife of Soviet Physicist, Andrei Sakharov, Mrs. Yelena Sakharov, received an award from the Adelaide Ristori Italian Cultural Centre in Rome on Saturday (20 September) in recognition of her services to the principle of human rights in the Soviet Union.
She was awarded the prize for her collaboration with her husband's human rights activities within the Soviet Union, where Andrei Sakharov is considered to be a dissident.
Mrs. Sakharov was one of sixty women from 14 countries who received awards for distinguished works in various fields.
The awards were made in connection with International Women's year.
Mrs. Sakharov said the award represented a closer bond between women throughout the world particularly those fighting for civil liberties.
Her husband has been decried by the Soviet Press as a "political simpleton" whose views represent a "naive conglomeration".
He has been a leading spokesman for civil rights campaigners in the Soviet Union.
