    Background: SYDNEY HARBOUR, AUSTRALIA

Despite fears that it might be called off because of a strike by fuelling staff, the third annual ferry-boat race took place on January 16. Six regular passenger ferries competed in front of a crowded harbourside in brilliant sunshine. In keeping with their age, the older vessels were allowed to start first on a handicap basis. But the thrusting youngsters, Lady Woodward, Lady McKell and Lady Cutler, soon caught up and took the lead. And it was Lady Woodward, skippered by Allan Owen, which was first across the finishing line under the harbour bridge. Lady Cutler and Lady McKell were just behind in a photo finish.
