The President of the European Commission, Mr. Roy Jenkins, has said this week that enlargement of the Common Market is necessary. Arriving in Portugal on Thursday (10 November), Mr. Jenkins spoke of the desirability of accepting new members into the EEC but said it was important to ensure that enlargement led to a strengthening, rather than weakening of the Community. Opponents to enlargement believe the inclusion of Portugal, Greece and Spain could lead to a further watering down of the EEC.
