The newly-elected Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Kakuei Tanaka, had his first official meeting with representatives of the Government of The People's Republic of China in Tokyo on Tuesday (15 August)
The meeting followed acceptance by Mr. Tanaka of an invitation from Premier Chou En Lai to visit Peking to discuss establishing normal relations between China and Japan.
This could put a final end to the enmity between Japan and China which led to major wars in 1894 and 1937.
At the tokyo meeting, Mr. Tanaka spoke with the Deputy Secretary-General of the China-Japan Friendship Association, Sun Ping-Hua and the Chief Representative in Japan of the Chinese Memorandum Trade Office, Hsiao Hsiang-chien. Mr. sun is also the leader of the Shanghai ballet Troupe which has been visiting Japan.
Mr. Tanaka expressed the hope that his talks in Peking would be fruitful.
