    Background: SOME 2,000 PEOPLE TOOK PART IN A PROTEST MARCH IN AMSTERDAM TODAY (SATURDAY). THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE RECENT APPOINTMENT OF GENERAL VON KIELMANNSEGG TO THE TOP NATO (NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION) JOB OF COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF ALLIED FORCES CENTRAL EUROPE.

    THE DEMONSTRATION BEGAN IN THE EARLY AFTERNOON WITH MARCH THROUGH AMSTERDAM. IT WAS ORGANISED BY THE P.S.P. POLITICAL GROUP.

    GENERAL JOHANN ADOLF VON KIELMANNSEGG WAS APPOINTED IN JULY AND BECAME SECOND RANKING OFFICER TO THE SUPREME ALLIED COMMANDER IN EUROPE, THE AMERICAN GENERAL LYMAN LEMNITZER.

    GENERAL KIELMANNSEGG SERVED WITH THE GERMAN ARMY IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR. HE HAD ENTERED A CAVALRY REGIMENT IN 1926 AND BY 1940 WAS MADE CHIEF OF STAFF, 6TH ARMOURED DIVISION. HE LATER SERVED IN THE RUSSIAN CAMPAIGN.

    HE IS THE FIRST WEST GERMAN GENERAL TO BE GIVEN SUCH A HIGH POSITION IN NATO.

    THE AMSTERDAM DEMONSTRATION WAS APPARENTLY QUIET AND ORDERLY BUT LATER POLICE SAID THERE HAD BEEN SOME ARRESTS.
