Background: Archbishop Makarios promised Cypriot farmers Government support when he addressed
a rally in Nicosia, Oct. 4 - the first held by the Pan Cyprian Farmers' Union since the
ending of the Cyprus emergency.

Riding on tractors, excavators, mechanical diggers and other farm equipment, the
men gathered at Nicosia's sports stadium. Surrounded by banners proclaiming the
plight of Cypriot agriculture, rally speakers condemned "British colonial
administration" for its neglect and indifference.

Archbishop Makarios said the new Government would do all it could to improve the
farmers' lot as soon as it was set up. He promised loans for irrigation, erosion
work and insurance schemes and advocated more modern farming methods to enable
the development of a strong market for Cypriot products.

Union officials spoke of the need for Government assistance for island farmers.

Nicosia's Mayor and other local officials gave their support.

The following day, Oct 5, Archbishop Makarios confirmed he would fly to Rhodes,
Greece, Oct. 7 for a meeting with former EOKA chief, General Grivas. Object of
the discussions: to settle differences between the two Greek-Cypriot leaders
which have recently been threatening the unity of Greek Cypriot people in the
island.
