  • Description

In Beirut, more than two thousand members of the Palestine Liberation Organisation on Tuesday (8 August) attended a commemorative rally for Ezzadine Kalak, the PLO's former chief representative in France, who was slain in Paris last week. At the rally, PLO leader yasser Arafat assailed the policies of Israel and the United States in the Middle East.

SYNOPSIS: One of the key speakers was the Palestinian poet Mohim ???assiso, who is one of the most ardent spokesman for the PLO cause. Ezzadine Kalak, and his deputy Adnan Hummad, were shot dead on Thursday (3 August) when two Arab gunmen burst into their office in the French capital firing sub-machine guns and hurling hand grenades.

Yasser Arafat condemned both the United States and israel as imperialists, and accused them of meddling in Middle East affairs that were not of their concern. The same day as this rally, the White House announced that Egypt's President Anwar Sadat had agreed to meet Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at President Carter's Camp David retreat in the United States on September the fifth. The leaders would aim to seek a framework for peace in the Middle East. The PLO made no immediate official comment on the Sadat-Begin summit, but a senior official said Mr. Sadat's move showed he was totally committed to a bilateral deal with Israel.

The rally concluded with a parade, which featured marchers described as Palestinian fighters. Most of them are under ten years of age.
