Background: The president of Venezuela, Rafael Caldera, made a short visit to Bogota on Monday (5 February). He landed, was officially welcomed by President Pastrana of Colombia, inspected a Guard of Honour, and then took off again.
President Caldera is on a ten-day tour of all the Andean Pact countries - Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Bolivia. As yet, Venezuela's application to join the pact has not been approved, and officials in Caracas say that the president's tour is aimed at helping the application along.
At the El Dorado Airport, President Caldera was welcomed officially by Colombia's leaders, and whisked quickly around the tarmac where he inspected an assembled Guard of Honour.
Less than one hour after he landed, President Caldera and Mrs. Caldera were in their aircraft again and heading for Ecuador.
SYNOPSIS: About two thousand people were at the El Dorado airport in Bogota on Friday to welcome President Caldera of Venezuela when he paid a brief call on Colombia's President Pastrana.
President and Mrs. Caldera are on their way around all the countries of the And???n Pact...and although Venezuela has not yet been admitted into the pact, observers say this tour might help things along a little.
President and Mrs. Pastrana of Colombia headed a party of dignitaries to greet the Venezuelan leader, and thousands of people at the airport turned on a banner welcome for them.
The visit to Bogota was the shortest one on the ten-day touring itinerary. President Caldera made a brief address at the airport, and then he was escorted by President Pastrama though the ranks of a Guard of Honour.
Less than an hour after he landed, President Caldera left for Ecuador.
