Background: An international conference on the integration of women in national development plans has opened in Nouakchott, capital of Mauritania.
SYNOPSIS: The opening session was addressed by Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah. He told the 30 delegates from all over Africa that the conference was intended to assess the progress made so far in getting women to play a useful role in the development of their country. He said the world was beginning to realise more and more how valuable the participation of women could be in the political, social and economic life of their nation. President Ould Daddah said the achievement of total integration of the role of women in national development would go a long way in helping to change the thinking that their position is that of parasite in the society. The conference is being held jointly by the Organisation of African Unity and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
