The United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, left Damascus on Friday (11 October) after a none-day visit during which he held talks with Syrian leaders.
Speaking to newsmen before his departure, he said that during his discussions with President Hafez Al-Assad and Foreign Minister Abdel-Halim Khaddam bilateral relations between the United States and Syria had been reviewed.
Asked whether prospects for Middle East peace were good, Dr. Kissinger replied:
"I am always encouraged."
He also confirmed that he would return to Damascus on Monday (14 October) after visiting Jordan and Israel over the weekend.
The Syrian Government issued a brief statement on the talks saying that President Assad and Dr. Kissinger had reviewed "The current situation in the region and Syria's viewpoint towards this, as well as the United Sates position."
