Background: VISNEWS filmed during the All India Tibet Convention, in Calcutta May 30-31 and a rival Indian Communist demonstration held simultaneously.

At the Convention, impassioned pleas were made for raising the Tibet question in the United Nations. A leading speaker strongly criticised the Indian Government's acceptance of Chinese suzerainty over Tibet, but felt sure Mr. Nehru would never "do a shoddy deal" and pass off the subjugation of Tibet as autonomy. "India should help prevent the gobbling up of Tibet by the huge Chinese dragon", he said.

A Tibetan Lama who was present recently arrived from Lhasa proposed that a commission of neutral Asian representatives should visit Tibet, as soon as possible, on a fact-finding tour.

Messages of sympathy and support for the Convention's a???s were received from many Asian countries. Those taking part in the Communist demonstration - kept separate from the Tibet Convention by strong police pickets - were parading in support of Indo-Chinese friendship and against interference in China's internal affairs. They also condemned the "imperialist conspiracy" in Tibet.
