  • Description

A 25-year-old Greek Cypriot was shot dead on Thursday (5 April) night in Larnaca, South Cyprus. The murder was described as the first political killing in the conflict between supporters of President Makarios and former EOKA guerrilla leader General Grivas.

Police were searching for three men who shot George Photiou, described as a Makarios supporter, from a car as he drove home. Later, during the night, two bombs exploded in Larnaca -- one destroyed a bus and the other started a fire at a petrol station. There was yet another bomb incident. This was in a coffee shop in Polis, northwest Cyprus, until now an area comparatively undisturbed by the trouble.

Larnaca has become the centre of the violence between supporters of President Makarios, who is committed to maintain the independence of the Republic, and General Grivas, who returned secretly to Cyprus in September 1971 to organise a new drive for Enosis (union with Greece). President Makarios recently accused the General of plotting to overthrow the Cyprus government by violence.
