  • Description

Italian Communist Party Secretary-General Enrico Berlinguer -- a leading exponent of so-called `Euro-communism'-was welcomed by Hungarian leader Janos Kadar at Budapest airport on Friday (30 September) at the start of his three-day official visit. Signore Berlinguer, whose party is a powerful influence on Italian parliamentary politics, favours a form of communism independent of traditionally-dominant Soviet Union influence.

SYNOPSIS: Hungary has itself in the past been dominated by the Soviet line, while Signore Berlinguer leads a party devoted to the philosophy of `Euro-communism'. The label was widely adopted after the June to July conference of European Communist Parties last year in East Berlin, which decided that all the parties involved were independent and free to decide their own policies. During his address to the conference, Signor Berlinguer said the meeting was `not that of an international communist body, which does not exist and cannot exist in any form, either on an international or a European level. Our meeting is a free encounter of independent and equal parties."
Hungarian Communist Party chief Janos Kadar rose to power a decade after the abortive revolution of 1956. The official Hungarian news agency, MTI, said he and Signor Berlinguer held lengthy talks, during which they exchanged views about international events and the expansion of relations and co-operation of their parties.
