  • Description

SALVAGE EXPERTS AT THE PORT OF EMDEN IN THE NORTH OF WEST GERMANY YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) RAISED THE HULK OF THE SUNKEN SUBMARINE HAI.

THE LITTLE TRAINING SHIP, A SECOND WORLD WAR U-BOAT, WENT DOWN IN THE NORTH SEA ON 14 SEPTEMBER. NINETEEN MEMBERS OF HER CREW WERE KILLED -- THERE WAS ONLY ONE SURVIVOR.

A FLOATING CRANE HAD TOWED THE HAI FROM THE NORTH SEA AND UP THE EMS RIVER TO EMDEN, WHERE THE HULK WAS PUMPED OUT AND THE BODIES OF HER CREW REMOVED. THEY WILL ALL BE GIVEN BURIALS WITH MILITARY HONOURS.

AT EMDEN A WEST GERMAN NAVAL COMMISSION IS INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE OF THE DISASTER, AND OFFICIALS OF THE SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE ARE ENQUIRING INTO CHARGES THAT THE U-BOAT DID NOT CARRY ENOUGH SAFETY EQUIPMENT.

A FORMER CAPTAIN OF THE HAI, LIEUTENANT COMMANDER WOLF-DIETRICH REHSE AND OTHER OFFICERS HAVE AGREED THAT THE SUBMARINE WAS SEAWORTHY.
