    THE TWO MINISTERS MET AT LANCASTER HOUSE, WHERE HERR BRANDT WAS ATTENDING A ONE-DAY PRIVATE MEETING OF THE ACTION COMMITTEE FOR THE UNITED STATES OF EUROPE. THE COMMITTEE FOR THE UNTIED STATES OF EUROPE. THE COMMITTEE MET TO DISCUSS PROBLEMS ARISING FROM BRITAIN'S ATTEMPT TO JOIN THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY (THE COMMON MARKET).

    THE ACTION COMMITTEE IS A NON-GOVERNMENTAL PRESSURE GROUP WORKING FOR EUROPEAN UNITY, AND INCLUDES REPRESENTATIVES OF MOST POLITICAL PARTIES AND NON-COMMUNIST TRADE UNION OF THE SIX COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES AND BRITAIN.

    THE MEETING WAS PRESIDED OVER BY M. JEAN MONNET, THE FRENCH "FATHER OF EUROPEAN UNITY", AS HE IS KNOWN, WHO FOUNDED THE ACTION COMMITTEE IN 1955.
