  • Description

Two Englishmen yesterday (Saturday) prepared their small sailboat as they made ready to sail from Hayling Island in Hampshire to Australia.

The two men are David Pyle, a professional sailing instructor, with dark hair and David Derek, a free-lance sound recordist, with ginger hair. They have been planning the trip for over a year. They expect to start the journey from Hayling Island next Saturday (26 April).

The 12,000-mile-trip will take the two men to the French coast, around and into the Mediterranean Sea, overland to the Tigris River and the Persian Gulf, around to Karachi and Bombay and out towards New Guinea. They will then sail along the Great Barrier Reaf of Australia to their final destination of Brisbane. They except to reach Brisbane in about a year's time. The cost of the trip was placed at approximately GBP2,000 sterling.

Their boat is an 18-foot-long Drascombe class lugger. It is a light-weight craft, modified from an old North Sea design. Called the "Hermes", the craft was built last November specifically for the trip.

During the journey, the two men plan to make a number of stops at which their food supplies -- already stockpiled at Hayling Island -- will be flown out to them in stages.

Yesterday, the "Hermes" was taken out to sea and given a test run and the sails and mast were checked.

Both men live locally at Hayling Island.
